Evolve Bank & Trust Establishes Scholarship in Memory of E. James House, Jr.
Evolve Bank & Trust has established an annual scholarship at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in memory of E. James "Jim" House, Jr., a 1967 law alumnus and, until his death in December 2009, the bank’s legal counsel, financial consultant, and member of its board of directors.
Jim House’s success in both the legal and financial professions allowed him to be a part of many great organizations during his life. He began his career in 1962 with the Union Planters Corporate Trust Division. In 1969, he became associated with Holiday Inns of America. In 1987, he returned to Unions Planters as executive vice president and senior trust officer, remaining in that position until 1995, when he became general counsel of Union Planters Corporation and served as Secretary on its Board of Directors. In 2004, he joined the Memphis office of Wyatt, Tarrant, and Combs, LLP. During his life, Mr. House was also a member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church, the board of Planned Parenthood, and the Ric Nuber YMCA.
The criteria for the law scholarship continues Mr. House’s interests and qualities, such as an interest in finance, a strong character with an ability to overcome adversities, and academic perseverance. It will be awarded in the 2011-2012 academic year with preference (but not a requirement) given to graduates of Vanderbilt University.
Additional gifts to the fund in Mr. House’s memory can be made by contacting Shawna Engel, University of Memphis law school director of development, at 901-678-2425.
